     Ethiopia

The Story

Ethiopia, often referred to as the "Land of 13 Suns," is one of the most enchanting countries in the world and holds the unique distinction of never having been colonized. Its coffee and injera are celebrated globally. Amidst its stunning landscapes, in the town of Wolkite, Ethiopia, stands Wolkite University Hospital, the sole healthcare facility serving the city. Each day, the hospital's devoted staff cares for approximately 240 patients, addressing a wide range of health issues. Among these, the most common ailments are pneumonia, dyspepsia, and schizophrenia. The hospital's maternity ward witnesses the birth of an average of 110 babies every month. Out of these, around 46 are C-sections. However, the hospital faces challenges in its operations. For instance, when in need of blood for patients, physicians have to request it from local banks, store it in the laboratory, and re-request it when supplies run low.

Recognizing the pressing needs of the hospital, CHF members Peter and Paulos Samuel undertook a comprehensive survey of the hospital's staff to understand and address their requirements. As a result, a generous donation was made to the hospital, amounting to approximately $12,000. This donation comprised essential medical equipment and supplies such as snares, biopsy forceps, stents, injection needles, feeding tube kits, cauterization probes, surgical masks, and two vital endoscopes. These items are set to replenish the inventory of the maternity and GI ward, ensuring that patients receive immediate care with state-of-the-art equipment tailored to address the common diseases prevalent in the hospital.

This initiative was made possible through the collaborative efforts of contacts like Dr. Habte, Dr. Fikre Tsion, and Dr. Rebi. The donated items not only signify immediate relief but also represent the beginning of a long-term commitment to enhancing the healthcare infrastructure of Wolkite.

CHF is immensely proud of this endeavor and remains committed to forging international relations and global connections. Our vision is clear: to elevate healthcare standards and touch lives, no matter where in the world they might be. We believe that with collective effort, we can make a world of difference, one project at a time.
