Dominican Republic
The Story
San Pedro de Macoris, renowned as the birthplace of numerous professional baseball players, has produced an impressive 99 MLB players, only slightly fewer than the Dominican capital, Santo Domingo, which boasts 106. This is particularly noteworthy given that Santo Domingo's population is more than ten times that of San Pedro.
Yet, beneath this athletic acclaim, San Pedro grapples with poverty and unemployment in certain neighborhoods, resulting in a diminished quality of life for some inhabitants. Many of those living below the poverty line find themselves without access to adequate healthcare, often relying solely on the Dr. Antonio Musa Regional Hospital.
Situated in the province of San Pedro de Macorís on the southeast coast of the Dominican Republic, the Dr. Antonio Musa Regional Hospital serves as a beacon of hope for the community. Operating under the Eastern Regional Health Service, this tertiary care hospital spearheads a vast health network that offers assistance to five municipalities within the province: the main municipality of San Pedro de Macorís, Consuelo, Los Llanos, Quisqueya, and Ramón Santana. Furthermore, the hospital extends its support to other eastern provinces, including El Seybo, Hato Mayor del Rey, La Romana, and La Altagracia.
It was Thalitha, a dedicated CHF volunteer, who brought to light the urgent need for medical equipment at Dr. Antonio Musa Regional Hospital. Her mother, leading a non-profit that aids underprivileged children in health and education, became a crucial link. Following several WhatsApp video calls, CHF discerned the hospital's requirements and coordinated with Thalitha’s mother, who was heading to the Dominican Republic, to facilitate the delivery. CHF is honored to contribute to this significant effort in the Dominican Republic.
